Cookies and similar technologies

Palster uses a handful of cookies to keep you signed in and secure, and stores a few settings on your device. No advertising or tracking cookies.

On this page

The short version

Palster sets a small number of cookies, all needed to sign you in and keep Palster secure. We don’t use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or analytics from other companies, so there’s no cookie banner asking for consent. Palster also remembers a few of your settings in your browser’s own storage.

Cookies Palster sets

These are first-party cookies: only Palster can read them. The ones that sign you in can’t be read by scripts on the page.

NameWhat it’s forHow long
palster_sessionKeeps you signed in. Without it, you’d be signed out on every page.30 days, or 1 day if you don’t ask to stay signed in. Signing out ends it.
palster_two_stepOnly if you use two-step sign-in: holds your half-finished sign-in while you enter your code.10 minutes
palster_two_step_trustOnly if you choose “Don’t ask again on this device” when entering your code.30 days, or until you turn two-step off or make new recovery codes
palster_googleOnly if you sign in with Google: checks that Google’s answer belongs to the sign-in you started.10 minutes
palster_inviterRemembers your own invite code on your browser, so an account made from the same browser can’t collect your invite reward.1 year
palster_age_gateSet only if someone under 13 tries to sign up, so the age check can’t simply be retried.1 day
palster_switched_user_idUsed only when Palster’s own team views Palster as a member, or when you switch to a page you help run, to remember who you are acting as.Until you switch back, at most 7 days

Cookies from others

  • Cloudflare, which delivers Palster and protects it from attacks, may set a security cookie (such as __cf_bm or cf_clearance) to tell people from bots. It isn’t used to track you.
  • Google reCAPTCHA, when it’s switched on for sign-up and sign-in, may set its own cookies to tell people from bots. It loads only on those pages. Google’s privacy policy applies.
  • YouTube may set cookies when you play a YouTube video inside Palster. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced player.
  • Stripe and PayMongo set their own cookies on their payment pages, which open only when you buy Palneum.

Settings stored on your device

Palster also keeps some things in your browser’s storage (local storage and IndexedDB) so the app is quick and remembers your choices. Nothing here is sent to other companies. It includes:

  • Preferences: light or dark mode, language and currency, notification sounds, camera and Scene settings, your Campfire sound mix.
  • Drafts and unsent things: a crash copy of the post you’re writing, Palsenger drafts, and messages waiting to send when you’re offline. Your real drafts are saved to your account.
  • Copies for speed: recent notifications, your photo, what you’ve already seen, so pages open instantly.
  • Things you’ve hidden or muted, some of which are also synced to your account so they follow you to your other devices, and a copy of what you’ve saved, so your saves show at once. What you save is kept in your account.
  • Your approximate area, only if you allowed a feature to use your location.

The in-app browser’s reading list keeps page addresses and titles on this device for the profile that saved them, until removed or the site data is cleared. Its color, typeface and text-size choices also stay on the device. These are separate from Saved, which follows your account.

Signing out clears who you are from this storage. Clearing your browser’s site data removes all of it.

How to control them

You can block or delete cookies and site data in your browser’s settings. If you block palster_session, you won’t be able to stay signed in; everything else is optional for using Palster. Help for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge.
